The last couple of weeks we have been talking about the Village and how we derive many benefits from relationships - Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual. Some of you, however, have had bad experiences with your village. Whether school, church, or family - it happens sometimes that we end up in a village that has been more hurtful than helpful. While I cannot claim to have had YOUR experience or completely understand what you have been through I do know that it is unfair and actually unreasonable to assume your experience is the ONLY experience and that just because its happened ONCE or even a couple of times that it means it will happen EVERY time (in fact that is both All or Nothing Thinking and Overgeneralizing - see the book Feeling Good by David Burns for a full list of Cognitive Distortions we use that often lead to depression and other distorted thinking). So, how do you identify unhealthiness in relationships (whether others or yours).
I certainly cannot tell you what you can or should do in that situation only that it is unhealthy and if it can’t be changed or improved on then make steps toward removing yourself if there are other options.
