Sitting is the New Smoking

Sitting is the New Smoking

I had never heard this phrase until I was sitting in a teacher inservice class earlier this week. Apparently it has become a catchy warning that is being repeated by medical and mental health professionals. What it means is this: Sitting down for too many hours each day hurts your body in serious ways -- just like smoking. While it is true that sitting isn’t as deadly as smoking has proved to be, if sitting all day most of the week, it can certainly lead to a myriad of health -- and mental health -- concerns. Slow blood flow, higher disease risk (such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure), weaker muscles, and weight gain are among the possible risks.
